This might be one of Arlington’s best kept secrets.   Mainly because if I didn’t know it was there, I would probably miss it driving by to the mall.  It’s not in the best location.

But what it IS…is…one of the best damn sammiches I have had in quite a while.

You know I judge a sammich place on their HOT sammiches —I just don’t get the cold sub thing— I can whip up a cold sub at home —What I can’t do is make hot subs with quality meats and cheeses and unique breads.

Ok, I can.  And do.  But …oh just read on…

Firehouse is a very friendly, instantly at home-and-local-feel to it.   They get your order quick and deliver it a few minutes later.  They have a large shelf of just about every time of sauce you could think of to dress your sammich if you prefer.

They also have that stupid soda machine I have battles with – but  I digress.

As I looked around the restaurant, I didn’t see too many people talking.  They were all eating.   That’s a sign of good food when everyone at the table is so busy enjoying it, they can’t even talk.  Or want to.  ha.

I also noticed on cups, flyers, and other places that Firehouse (which was started by two former firefighting brothers) is actively involved in give back and charity programs on local levels.   I think this is great when companies can spend more than a little of their time and wealth to give back.

When they slid that meatball on my tabletop, it was beautiful.   The melted cheese.   The visible amount of seasoning.  The slight char on that bread.  The tasty red sauce bathing those moist meatballs.  Oh I didn’t wanna eat it.   I wanted a poster of it on my wall.

I settled for a picture on my phone, and handled up on this.  It tastes even better than it looks.  Lots of flavor.  The bread is slightly soft and tender but holds onto that plentiful pile of yumminess.

Since this visit, it has become my favorite meatball sandwich in Arlington.  I am calling it right now.  It’s that good.

TASTE TEST: DiGiorno Meatball Pizza

20 May

The frozen pizza world has been boring to me lately. When I say lately, I mean a couple of years now.

Honestly, in my town ( and I am sure yours too) I can get a pizza from a local chain for around 6-8 bucks. Less than 6 if I really keep an eye out.

So if I have time, I would much rather swing buy and pick up a pie from a pizzeria rather than go home to the frozen 5 or 6 dollar pie waiting for me in the freezer.

But I do keep an eye out and I check the frozen pizza lanes for new things.

DiGiorno has a new “ITALIAN FAVORITES” line that is very promising.

Something you might not be aware of, is that hamburger is a very popular topping.

BUT the price of it has been going up lately, so I have noticed that most buffet places do not put out hamburger pizzas because of the higher cost.

So when I see a MEATBALL MARINARA pizza sitting there on the shelf, I was quite surprised and a little giddy.

I love meatball sandwiches, and some local mom and pop pizzerias have meatball as a topping. This looked promising. This looked yummy.

And the second picture below reveals it looks just as good from my oven as it did on the box.

The taste – with hints of herb and olive oil really give this frozen pie a restaurant quality taste.

The meatballs are juicy and they do not skimp on the toppings. Everything about this pie tastes like an upgrade to what I would consider a normal DiGiorno pie.

It’s easily he best frozen pizza I have had in many moons.

I’m sure you have seen the commercials where the family/friends can’t believe “it’s not delivery”.

To my taste buds, they finally have nailed it.

It’s a frozen pizza that I can actually look forward to buying.

I hate it when I’m right

I always judge a sandwich shop by their “hot” sandwiches.

Anyone can throw some cold cuts on some bread.

To me, if you can make a kick ass HOT sandwich, you are on your way to having something good going.

Quizno’s – a few years ago used to have a meatball sandwich I liked. It was the sandwich that got me hooked on them.

AND OF COURSE – if you read this blog you know by now- If I LOVE something it gets cancelled or discontinued.

So flash forward to now.

My latest trip to Quizno’s I see they have a handful of new items.

One of them is MEATBALL SLIDERS that come in singles or two-packs.

It’s very filling, so don’t let the slightly small size fool ya. These ARE sliders after all.

They come standard –Meatball, sauce, and cheese. I am sure you can dress them up anyway you like but I love’em as is.

I am very glad to see that Quizno’s see things my way and has brought the meatball back. Not only as just a regular sandwich, but in these killer sliders.
