CADBURY CREME EGG

21 Apr

UntitledYes I am quite aware that Easter has passed.  But these things are a quarter now per four pack and I realized that I have never actually had one.   Until today.  They just seemed like egg-shaped Valentine candy to me so I never took the time to actually have one.

Until today.  Thinking I am gonna make a mess trying to take bites out of this thing….I just popped the whole egg in the mouth and bit down.

Wow.   This is pretty creamy chocolate.   The “creme” inside is super-sweet and rich.    I totally see why people fight other these now.   Although I do wish they were made of dark chocolate.  Why didn’t anyone tell me about these things???!?!?!?!

CANDY COUNTER: Rolo

31 Jul

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you ROLO.   It’s simpe.  It’s classic.  It’s elegent.  It’s classy.   If for some reason, you have never had Rolo, it is a caramel filled chocolate bite.

Now doubt you have had chocolates for Valentine’s Day – well this is a “roll” of them for eating on the go.  They aren’t decorated to impress, they are built for holding massive amounts of caramel.

I would put these up against most “box of chocolates” I have had.   With just two ingredients, they really just nailed these.  You get enough chocolate to saftisfy cravings, but the caramel swirling into each chew makes you think you are eating a much more expensive treat.

ROLO used to have an ad campaign promoting the candy as being so good, you would want to share it with a friend.

Seriously.  You won’t.  You will want all these to yourself.   So walk past the over priced box of chocolates and get these.  You will be satisfied.

CANDY COUNTER: The Classics v.1

18 Jul

Sometimes you just want the classic.  I was standing in a store looking down the candy aisle.   Didn’t want chocolate.   No to peanut butter.  I wanted fruit flavors but not chewy like Starburst or Skittles.   I just stood there for a second and had pretty much given up.

I was on my out of this aisle, and on the upper corner… a spot I hardly ever looked at before is Lifesavers.   The original fruit flavors:  CHERRY – RASPBERRY-WATERMELON-ORANGE-PINEAPPLE.  All flavorful from first taste to last.  Hard-candy, sweet, and a solid crunch if I want it.   I am instantly reminded – or more like asking myself – when have I had these last?   I couldn’t remember so that in and of itself was worth the purchase.    These are timeless treats that have been around forever and it’s easy to see why.   It’s simple and hard to beat.

Hello again, Lifesavers.   I forgot how much I missed ya.

CANDY COUNTER: BLOOMS Candy & Soda Shop

15 Apr

Now this is EXACTLY what I was talking about!!!!!

If you keep up with this blog (and if you don’t I will not invite you to my party) I felt sorta tricked by the whole “Candy Haven” concept in Denton.

Well on a tip from a fan, I was informed that in Carrollton, there is this lovely little sweet shop called BLOOMS.

This place is alot like The Soday Gallery in The Bishop Arts District…except the photo negative in terms of inventory.

Soda Gallery has a ton of sodas and a few candies and treats.

BLOOMS has a TON of candies and treats and a pretty damn good selection of sodas (albeit a smaller selection…but they have all the faves…and some hard to find ones that Soda Gallery doesn’t carry!)

This place is FANTASTIC and jammed pack with cool stuff. As you can see from the pic, these people know their candybars and other things.

Anything from the classic Hot Dog gum to Zagnut bars.

They even carry the replacement for my beloved MARATHON bar……oh……yeah.

It’s located on Main St. in Carrollton, so go and check it out. I guarantee you will leave with a fat sack of sweets.

And ….another heavier sack of bad ass sodas!

REVIEW: CANDY HAVEN

2 Apr

Driving through Denton the other day and I passed a sign that read CANDY HAVEN.

I immediately got excited and started ramping up my expectations.

I was thinking some place kooky and funky. Kinda like the Soda Gallery in the Bishop Arts area.

Some place I could spend an hour and all my allowance on FUN-DIP….Bubble Gum Cigarettes….Bubble Burgers….SPREE….

…..and it’s nothing like I imagined.

It turns out, the “CANDY HAVEN” is part of a larger building. The entire facility is actually a bakery. They make amazing looking baked goods. The pic above shows you their candy counter – which is full of chocoloate covered things like truffles, strawberries, etc….

As I looked around, I noticed they also sell gummi bears and M & M’s and a few other candies by the weight like you would find in your local grocery.

I felt sort of let down. Don’t get me wrong. I love chocolate and they serve up delicious items.

But as someone who had no idea what he was getting into, CANDY HAVEN seems like a misleading name.

I still encourage you to try them. I bet their cakes taste amazing as well. Just don’t go there expecting a candy shop filled with all the old favorites you grew up with.

POP TART SUSHI !!!

With the opening of POP TARTS WORLD NYC, I thought I would do something fun.    Pop Tarts World is a brick and mortar store where you can get all sorts of cool things to eat and other items.

You can have custom T-shirts made, sample over 30 different pop tart flavors….but what the PRESS completely freaked out about was…

POP TART SUSHI

Now I am not certain if they just read the headline or what, but it IS NOT A POP TART CONTAINING FISH—–OKAY!?!?!?!

It IS (and we know because we made them, and that is what you see above)…….actually a very CLEVER recipe. To make them yourself you will need:

FIRST:

2 or 3 different kinds of POP TARTS – we chose Strawberry and Chocolate.

SECOND:

FRUIT ROLL-UPS – this will simulate the NORI, or seaweed wrapping found around some types of sushi. This gives the “pop-tart sushi” a chewy kick.

THIRD:

Chop up one of each of your pop tarts. Minced or chunky, or whatever you like. As you can see by above, we chose chunky.

Un-roll the “roll-up” and then lay a generous portion of your pop-tarts on the end and roll until you get a nice, fat roll-up.

FOUR:

Chill in the fridge so the roll-up can “set” and make it easier to cut.

FIVE:

Slice these into sushi portions.

(sushi means “sour”, NOT “fish”, as most people believe)

SIX: Bust out the chopsticks and have fun!!!

These things are WEIRD, but really good, and I got a sugar rush like you wouldn’t believe after eating a few, so keep it lite!

They were a TON OF FUN to make though, and all the JFC crew scarfed them down pretty quick. If you have kids, they would LOVE these!!!!

ON A SIDE NOTE: I THINK THIS RECIPE WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO GET KIDS COMFORTABLE WITH THE IDEA OF “REAL” SUSHI.

IF THEY WOULD EAT THESE, CHANCES ARE YOU COULD TALK THEM INTO EATING “REAL” SUSHI, WHEN THEY ARE OLDER. AND SUSHI IS ACTUALLY PRETTY HEALTHY! SO MAYBE TRICK THEM WITH THE SWEET STUFF NOW AND SET THEM UP FOR HEALTHY EATS FOR LIFE LATER??? (and people say we never talk about the healthy stuff)
