McDONALD’s – SWEET BBQ CHICKEN

14 Aug

UntitledThe full name of this sammich is the “Sweet BBQ Bacon Buttermilk Crispy Chicken” sammich.   That is one hell of a name.  I shortened it to …..

“Uh…can I get that BBQ chicken-wing-ding sammich?”

“Sorry…what you say?”

“Uh… can I get the crispy bacon with chicken BBQ sammich?”

“uhhhhh yeah…….sure.”

SHADDUP already and tell me how it tastes funny-jerk!

Okay, I can’t believe I am going to say this, but this is the BEST thing I have ever eaten at a Mickey D’s.    Yeah.  I said it.

You know I am not that big of fan of their food anymore – but this sammich has all the flavor and textures and just all-around-indulgence that you want from a fast food place.

I loved this damn sammich and I am not afraid to admit it!

CHICK-FIL-A – BBQ Blues

5 Aug

UntitledI love CFA.  Love love love it.  One of the things I love about it is their BBQ sauce.  It is tangy and sweet and different than every other ‘cue sauce out there.  Very light and unique…..and now they have discontinued it.

After it being one of their staple flavors ever since I could remember…they have dumped it for a new “Smokehouse BBQ”.

uh…..crap….another key food component of my upbringing is gone away….

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, cry-baby…so how does the NEW sauce taste???

Actually it’s pretty damn awesome!!   It’s an instant favorite and something that would eat on more than just CFA items.  This is the kind of ‘cue sauce I would buy in a bottle if available.  It has all the classic flavors you would expect from a great sauce.

I honestly wish they would have kept both, though.  I have a few original bbq sauces left over that I am now rationing….but when it’s over…I guess I can survive and move forward….but I am gonna miss that pineapple-y..sweet ‘cue of yesterday.

WINGSTOP – SMOKE 9 WINGS

28 Mar

UntitledMy tastes are ever-evolving when it comes to wing flavors.  Wingstop has debuted a new flavor that I like called SMOKE 9.   It’s exactly what you might think…a smoky…bbq-y…slightly pepper-y…dry rub type flavor.

Not a total dry rub though, as you can see.  It’s good but it’s missing a note…like maybe a sweetness?

And then it hits me.  These sort of taste like a more smoky version of the Nashville Hot Chicken from KFC.

Now whether that is intended or by accident, if you know about both, it’s undeniable.    KFC has them just by a hair on the flavor…but of course Wingstop has them on the quality of the chicken and it’s flavor.  Comparison aside it’s still very good…..but I am still waiting for Wingstop to bring back their best flavor ever….the Serrano Pepper Glaze…oh how I miss that sauce!!!

STUBB’S Dr PEPPER BBQ SAUCE

9 Jul

I defy anyone on this planet to love DR PEPPER more than I.   I can’t even donate blood anymore because they tell me the veins are full of soda.  The fine staff at the Waco Dr PEPPER museum have an animatronic me sitting in the lobby greeting guests and giving away “I’m a Pepper” stickers to pretty ladies and children of all ages.

Do you get it?   I love it.

I also love Stubb’s BBQ sauce.  Always have.   It’s just a great, all-around sauce, that is a go-to in my fridge quite often.   So when they joined forces, I thought my heart was gonna explode.

And then it didn’t.   I am not sure why but I can’t get into this sauce.   Just sampling it from the bottle – there was this hard-sweet-syrup-aftertaste that didn’t quite taste right.   Maybe it needs to cook down a touch to release some of the power of that brown glory…but at first blush I was disappointed…..to be continued…

BAKER’S RIBS

21 Jan

Baker's RibsIt’s hard for any group of people to agree on ‘cue.  Some folks are firmly in the Dickey’s camp while others are all about the Spring Creek.

Me?  I don’t care for either.  I am super-critical of ‘cue joints because:

A:  it’s not that hard to make some pretty decent BBQ at home so you gotta bring-it if you want me to fall in love with you.

B:  Several BBQ joints are pretty plain and boring.  They talk-up their ‘cue but actually it’s not that good.

So I enter Baker’s Ribs with some serious reservation.   I was overwhelmed with the smell of good food cookin’ so I was slowly coming around.

We tried a nice chunk of  their menu, chicken sammich, chopped beef, ribs, salad, beans, etc…to get a good feel for the place.

There are several in the DFW area and beyond – as I noticed on my last trip to East Texas.

I think they have some serious ‘cue here.  The ribs (not shown because I ate them before any of us remembered that we were there to take pictures and review the food) were thick and tender.   No struggle to tear that meat off the bone.  Nice.

The chicken sammich was very good too.  Big portion size and the meat was very tender.  The sides weren’t the star of the show here – but they aren’t supposed to be.   The side salad was very fresh and made-to-order; which we liked.

The only two minor issues we had (1) we didn’t see or get any rolls or cornbread with our order.  I am not sure how we forgot to ask- or even if we did – but some great yeast rolls or some fresh cornbread would have added to our enjoyment here.

This is most likely our fault because we had sammiches and they probably don’t come with bread since the sammich has bread already – but I always love to try the rolls or cornbread in a place.  Sometimes that is the deciding factor if I like a place or not.

(2) This doesn’t just apply here, but to most BBQ joints.  Sometimes places pre-cook the meat and then it is stored in heating trays or under heating lamps to keep it warm.   More often than not it keeps the food warm but just barely.   By the time you get out of line, get your drink and utensils and find a place to sit …the food is already slightly cold.   Nothin’ worse than cold ‘cue.   I felt sort of rushed to eat because I could tell it was already getting colder with each bite.

Despite that last paragraph, Baker’s Ribs has become my current favorite place to get ‘cue these days.

EL CHICO Secret Menu

10 Nov

A funny thing happened on the way to my table at El Chico.

I had been craving some tex-mex  all day but when I sat down …all I could think about was I wanted somethin’ BEEFY!!!!!  Like a steak or something.

I mention this to the server and she tells me they have sandwiches and burgers that aren’t normally advertised.

Bingo!    I ended up ordering a BBQ bacon cheeseburger and it was pretty damn tasty!   I mean like, seriously…this will make it difficult to order something else next time because I know they make a solid burger.  Now the secret is out.   Order one and I bet you like it.

7-Select BBQ KETTLE CHIPS

10 Sep

I have never been a fan of “knock-off” brand stuff.  I think that is because my friend’s mom would always buy the knock-offs for him growing up and when he shared them – the almost always sucked.

Fruit Loops?  Nope.  He got “Fruit O’s” or something.   They looked the same but the taste wasn’t even close.    Doritos?  Nope.  He had “Theodore’s Nacho Rounds”.  Sucked.

So when I got a hot-dog from the SEV the other day, the super-nice lady working told me I got a free bag of chips- some promotional thing.   Okay…I start looking for Funyuns and she tells me it’s the 7-Select brand that is the freebie.

Seven-wha??

Turns out the Sev has been slowing incorporating more of their own private label products into the store.   Not sure I like this because it cuts down on the variety that I love from that place.

These BBQ Kettle chips were actually pretty damn good!   Better than the Lay’s brand for certain.  Nice-hard-crunch and some ample ‘cue flavoring.   I am liking these!

Add to this – my recent revelation about Aldi/Trader Joe’s and I am giving private label products or “knock offs” another look because some of the products they are cranking out today are equal to….if not better than the name brand stuff you grew up on.
