BURGER WAR: In-N-Out vs. Whataburger

3 Dec

Zipping back to Dallas and I cut thru Austin…ya know… keeping it Weird…..and I am hearing rumblings about the monster that is In-N-Out invading Austin.   I am hearing it will DOMINATE all burgers known to the Capital city and rule with an iron fist.    It’s even been said In-N-Out will lay waste to the Texas-based WHATABURGER.    That sounds like grounds for a BURGER WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Contender-to-the-throne comes into Austin hot and heavy with a helluvalotta California “cool and swagger”.  It’s hip.  It’s trendy.   It’s got bloody palm trees!!!!!

Whataburger, on the other hand, is the standard.  We know it.  People love to confuse NEW with BETTER.  Also…Whataburger has a slow drive-thru sometimes.

HERE IS THE BOTTOM LINE-  IN-N- OUT will NEVER be BETTER than WHATABURGER.    I have had both- both are very good in different ways.  But make NO MISTAKE—- Whataburger KILLS IT and here is why:

  1.  FRIES-   This alone settles the argument.  Before you even get to the burgers…the fries at In-N-Out….Out-N-Out SUCK!!!!  And they are made fresh!!!???  Whataburger fries ROCK compared to those sad sacks at the Palm-tree-joint.
  2. Whataburger serves HUGE BURGERS.   In-N-Out you gotta keep stacking meat to get full.   I have never met a person that could polish off a Double-Double-Whataburger and STILL BE HUNGRY.   Bigger portions for the same price with fresh flavor?    Gotta give it to Whataburger.

I must admit, when I-N-O (god is that annoying to have to type over and over) broke hard in Dallas I liked them.  Because they were NEW.  It was different.    In-N-Out is also VERY popular with California transplants here in Texas.   I myself remember it fondly from when I was a kid in CA., but NOSTALGIA can only take you so far.

Austin…and Texas… is WHATABURGER COUNTRY.

I’ve had them both and i will never understand how anyone could, in a million years, come to the conclusion, that whataburger is better than in n out. Whataburger was in my view, a step above burger King with jalapenos.
